Reckless Heat by Lynn Raye Harris is the prequel to Hot Pursuit book #1 in the Hostile Operation series(H.O.T.) where we met Evie Baker and Matt Girard originally and is a winner in my book! This book reminds me alot of when I was in high school and the feelings young girls have for their high school crush. In Reckless Heat we read about Matt and Evie's back story, how they meet as children and become best friends growing up. When they reach high school, Matt who grew-up rich but is dealing with with family drama wants to get get away, he applies for West Point, being accepted, he knows he is leaving after he graduates. Oh did I mention he is also the high school hot stud being with this girl and that girl. This fact hurts Evie who has fallen in love with Matt even though they aren't as close as they were as when they were children. Wanting to make Matt notice her she makes her move on him. Well he does eventually notice, makes a move on her and treats her bad after, hurting her terribly. I really encourage you to read this prequel novella, I am sure you will not be disappointed! It is great knowing back stories to characters! Lynn Raye Harris's writing sucks a person right into a story, the emotions, feelings and characters are wonderful. If you haven't read the other stories in the H.O.T. series I encourage you to read them also, they are great.I received an ARC of Reckless Heat for an honest opinion.

Matt and Evie have history and this book reveals their history. All the wanderings about what happened between these two and Matt's family history contributed to who he has become is all here. Wish this book had come first. It would have made reading Hot Pursuit even better. I would encourage readers to start here because moving through the others after this one would keep the "hot" flaming. In comparison to the others, it on warm. Worth reading.
Love the way that the character's came alive you can feel their feelings, you can see their reactions when they're talking and you can feel the energy of those around them.
I love when an author pulls you in, wets your imagination to have you so into the character's, the plot and the results that you just have to keep reading and want to check out more of that author's books.
This book with Evie and Matt has me just as much as the first book I read from Lynn Raye Harris, Redemption I Just have to get the series of both books now!!!
Man oh man! Ms. Harris has totally set the stage for me to dive into this series! Book 0 has completely captured my attention for this series, and especially for Matt and Evie’s story. Another plus for the series? Ms. Harris CAN write! My gosh! How difficult it is to enjoy a story when it seems like it’s a first rough draft - not the version of the book that was published! I found very few (I couldn’t remember finding ANY typos, etc. but hedged my bet a bit) errors and that simply multiplied my enjoyment. I’m heading to Book 1 with bated breath.
Matt and Evie as teenagers, before West Point and Culinary Academy. This short novella is a look at the last three weeks they have together before Matt leaves. He has never noticed her as a woman before until she makes an effort. If you have read the H.O.T. series you know Matt, the Louisiana hottie who breaks out with Cajun French on occasion. We know a little about their younger years but now we get the whole picture. This was a great trip back into their friendship. As part of the review group I was given an early reviewer copy for my honest review.
This story was a bit of a roller coaster of emotion for me (but I'm super sensitive). Matt was truly the biggest a-hole man-whore (wait, did I say "man"??) possible... Good thing he's off to West Point where maybe he'll finally grow up. Yeah, he had it tough, but the way he treats and uses girls...holy hell! Well, I guess his redeeming factor is that he knows what he is. And Evie was right-what a hypocrite! I felt so much for Evie. What a heartbreak. The characters had real depth and the storyline was so believable. Although Matt definitely doesn't deserve her, I'm a sucker for a happy ending and I can't to read the next one and see how this works out!
Reckless Heat tells the story what happened to Matt and Evie ten years ago. Harris wrote this one in first person, which is of my favorite. However, she does an excellent job showing how Matt and Evie became the people we meet in Hot Pursuit. Some reviewers have stated that they did not like Matt in this story. We aren't supposed to like him. It's another ten years before he gets his head completely on straight. Reckless Heat shows us great detail how much Matt has to make up for when he walks into that beauty shop at the start of Hot Pursuit. We also better understand Evie and her reaction to seeing Matt again. Harris has created an important addition to the Hostile Operations series.
Lynn Raye Harris is a talented writer who stunned me with her flexibility. This title is solidly in the New Adult category first person, angsty teenagers in their Senior Year, with all the challenges kids face. Drugs. Alcohol (and alcoholism). Sex. Parents who don't care. Parents who care too much. Zero support at home. First love. No hope of breaking the cycles of poverty. Entitled rich with opportunities. Possessive psycho girlfriends or boyfriends. The situation surrounding the beginning of Matt and Evie's romance was almost painful to read, knowing how it concluded, because I read book 1 in this series- Hot Pursuit- when it was a new release. One of those painful reads because I could see from his head and then from hers the story was bringing about the big, ugly breakup that Hot Pursuit dealt with as the two of them finally, finally found their happily ever after and redemption.
As a fan of the series, I found this prequel to be so worth the read.
