For architect Seraphy Pelligrini a chance to renovate the Ravenswood church designed by famed Chicago architect Louis Sullivan is the commission of a lifetime. For Tommie MacKinnoin, commissioning Seraphy is a way to repair their broken friendship. But when they discover the body sealed in the font, Seraphy falls into a web of intrigue and violence. A secret journal points the way, but as she and Tommy grow closer to the killers, their attention turns on their pursuers and the stakes grow higher. Nothing is what it seems and no one is safe along the Ravenswood.

Finished the first of this series, which was a free download. Immediately purchased this, the second of the series. I'm always a bit wary as often it seems the second doesn't quite stand up to an outstanding first effort. Not the case here. This is going on my 'must buy as soon as published' list, which is not that extensive.Same excellent characterization with the main characters being further developed, supporting characters more detailed and new characters added just as vividly. Again, the author's deft touch with "camouflaged" tough very evident in a professor with a background.
The folding in of characters from various war eras in this second book of the series is particularly well done, giving a rather bleak but very realistic look at the war ravages the soldiers involved in them.
All I can say is that I hope the third book in this series is available soon.

Along the Ravenswood Chicago Stories Book 2 edition by Eileen Robertson Hamer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
The book is well written with just enough humor. The characters are interesting to get to know and the dynamic between characters is engaging. Not only is it a good mystery but I learned something about Louis Sullivan and I love learning new things when I read. There is an error in the last chapter where they use the wrong character's name. Just need a quick fix here. I will certainly read more of these. Well done!
I fell in love with Seraphy in Chicago stories, and she continues to be engaging, resourceful, and likable in this sequel. So are the supporting characters, all beautifully filled out and with interesting stories of their own. The action flows well, and mostly makes sense, easy to follow. I hated for it to end, and I hope to see more of Seraphy in the future.
The book is an absolute page turner. The pace, the characterization (the retired spy/professor afraid of old age is hilarious), the plot with great twists (the seemingly demented war veteran as hero), and the many facets of love and war (Bataan to step-families) pulls the reader along from page one to the end.
I love Chicago and its architecture, and Eileen Hamer evidently does too -- her books are a celebration of the city's buidings. They are also fun looks into funny, fully-formed characters, people with neuroses and blind-spots and prejudices as well as fine leather jackets and cupboards full of great coffee.
I would never mistake this book for a true story -- there's a few too many near misses and perfect bodies -- but it is well-paced and very engaging, written in clean, clear prose that is a joy to read.
I look forward to more!
The first two books in this series are truly excellent. They capture the essence of Chicago, and have interesting characters and are very well written. I've recommended these books who live in the Chicago area, especially to a friend who lives in the area the first story is set in, and who works in Ravenswood. She was VERY impressed by the intimate knowledge of the areas and the people. Good job! Good stories! Highly Recommended.
I read the first novel in the series first, and loved it. The second was a bit different then I expected it to be, as the first dealt with gang activity in her new neighborhood (among other things of course, but that was the main mystery plot point), and this was a completely different type of murder, nothing to do with gangs. But, it was excellent, and I can't wait for the next one. The characters are great, learning more about the area and the different types of people who live and work there is definitely interesting, and the mystery keeps you guessing to the very end. Great twists and turns, danger, drama, and a love affair thrown into the mix keep you reading long after you should have gone to sleep!
I might like the second book in this series a little more than the first, and I gave the first book five stars. Ms. Hamer's main character, Seraphy Pelligrini, is developing nicely. She's interesting and smart, with flaws and attributes that make her someone who can carry a series without the reader getting bored. The story is well-written and the mystery intriguing. I liked that she has two men in her life. I hope that continues, at least for a while. I don't give away plots in my reviews, but this one is a winner. Highly recommended.
